The good news is this financial drain slows over time, usually leveling off after the ten-year mark.4 The type of boat you own also plays a major role. In-demand models like fishing boats and pontoons tend to hold their value better than niche luxury cruisers, thanks to a strong used market.4

A widely accepted guideline is to budget 10% of the boat’s value for annual upkeep.567 For a $50,000 boat, that means setting aside $5,000 each year.7
This budget covers predictable tasks like engine servicing, oil changes (which can cost $200-$500), and hull cleaning.17 But it’s the unexpected moments that test your budget. One wrong turn in a shallow channel and you’re looking at a propeller repair, which can range from $100 for aluminum to over $400 for stainless steel.89 A minor electrical gremlin might cost a few hundred dollars to chase down, but a major failure can easily soar past $1,000.7 And the ultimate fear, a catastrophic engine failure, can be a five-figure nightmare.

Annual maintenance, including checking tires and cleaning brakes, averages around $100.6 But a single bent axle from a pothole could set you back $600 or more to replace.6

Let’s be clear: boats are thirsty. A modest motorboat can easily burn six to eight gallons of fuel per hour at cruising speed. With marine fuel prices at the dock often significantly higher than what you pay on land, a single afternoon of fun can be a costly affair.10 A five-hour excursion could consume over $300 in fuel. Even idling at a sandbar sips more than you’d think.

6. A Place to Rest: Storage and Docking Fees
Your boat needs a safe harbor when it’s not exploring, and that harbor comes with a rental fee. Keeping your boat in a marina slip is the most convenient option, but it’s also the most expensive. Annual slip fees can range from $1,000 to well over $6,500, dictated by location, amenities, and your boat’s length.1112 Dry stack storage, where your boat is kept in a large rack on land, is often a more economical choice.11 Even storing your boat at home isn’t entirely free. You’ll need a quality cover, and winterization services can cost anywhere from a few hundred to over $2,500 for the season.1213
7. Preserving the Pride: Cleaning and Detailing
Keeping your boat clean is about more than just appearance; it’s an act of preservation. A gleaming hull isn’t just pretty; it’s a shield against the corrosive marine environment. While you can do the work yourself, many owners turn to professionals. A basic wash and wax can run from $20 to $30 per foot.1415 A more thorough job, including buffing out oxidation, can push that to $35 per foot or more.14 For a 25-foot boat, that’s a detailing bill that can approach $900.
